problem starting Squeak ('This visual class is not supported')

Squeak 2.7 fails to start on my notebook under FreeBSD.
Using the FreeBSD port, it builds fine.
after entering 'squeak &' while in the directory containing the image &
changes files,
I get 'Using default visual', followed by 'This visual class is not
supported'.
Could someone please point me to some info about this?
