I guess I should revise what I said a bit... Alpha versions (which immediately follow a VM point release) are kind of an exception.

So, you can usually use the 3.1alpha image with a 3.0 VM just fine (unless someone has created a 3.1alpha VM for some reason).  Basically, just use the latest VM that's available, unless it's somehow labelled as an experimental VM.

But you shouldn't use a 2.8 VM with a 3.0 image.  If you're using a 2.8 image for something, you should probably use the 3.0 VM (although the 2.8 VM would probably be fine, too).
