This is the faq for a try-before-you-buy mixing program. It seemed pretty
nice during the brief time I tried it last weekend.
The page also has some other interesting info on timing issues,
characteristics of boards, etc that we've been talking about.

I don't know an independent way to determine what your soundcard is doing
internally.
