Interesting. I just compiled a 3.0 Unix VM and compared it.

The 3.0 VM is about 2.7/1.3 percent faster than the 2.8pre5 VM on the same 
(2.9) image.

But the 3.0 image is about 4.8/4.5 percent slower than the 2.9 image, even 
with the faster 3.0 VM.
