Bob,

I agree.  Which is why I think that Apple might have a chance with Mac OS X,
since there ARE applications on that platform, Mac OS X is portable (unlike
the classic Mac OS), and there is synergy between developing for Mac OS X
and other *nix platforms.

One actual benefit to breaking up Microsoft (I do not favor such a breakup)
would have been the possibility for the Office group to target non-Windows
platforms in addition to the captive Mac platform. I do not think that
Microsoft would look happily at Apple trying to license Mac OS X against
Windows XP clients.

Interoperability and compatibility with the entrenched infrastructure is
key; that is also the real weapon held by a monopoly.
