VMMaker further enhancements?

So, my fine fellows and fellesses, 'tis time to consider what useful
things might further enhance that mighty utility known as VMMaker.

I concluded today that it ought to be possible to make the copying only
copy files that are newer than the 'target', thus potentially saving
time, especially if you are working across a network. At the same time,
maybe checking to see if the target is newer than the supposed source
should, I think, let us warn that the 'wrong' file was edited and give
you a chance to back-copy it. This would probably reduce the potential
for surprise over-writes of a file you have quickly hacked to add some
printf or whatever.

Of course, you should never, ever, manually edit a generated file, not
that you would, but maybe there is a plausible way to even detect that?
Any ideas?

I always had this vague idea that VMMaker ought to be able to assemble
the makefile (or at least the core part of it) since clearly we know
which files we are putting where etc. Does anyone have any good
suggestions for implementation?

Other neat ideas? Bug fixes even?
