Gaining the benefits of hardware acceleration

I was playing with Wonderland last night with my son (making a White
Rabbit do circles in a castle). We turned on hardware acceleration.
It took effect -- the grass changed color. But our White Rabbit
suddenly started moving SLOWER. Turning off hardware acceleration
sped him up again.

What did we do wrong? Do I need to turn on hardware acceleration
BEFORE making my actors?

Thanks!
  Mark
