I'll point out that there are some additional things to be done to 
build a high performance powerpc VM. IE changesets to make VM globals 
into a structure. See the squeak sourceforge macintosh special build 
folder for the changesets. Others have reported a 30% difference in 
the VM speed between the stock and altered VM on the powerpc 
platform. This as far as I know only applies to the PowerPC 
architecture for the GCC 2.9x series of compilers.

Note the GCC 3.1 will produce a much slower VM on the powerpc 
platform, it seems the optimizations which are very different aren't 
VM friendly.
