I agree that the keyboard-controlled menu should probably be turned off by default, then. (at least for text-editing menus)

I think it should eventually be possible to come up with a fix that allows keyboard-controlled menus and still preserves text highlighting, though, even if not in time for 3.2.  I think one of Steve Swerling's changesets handled this, actually, in the sense that it always showed the current highlighted text in all panes.
