Hi all

I hope to see some squeakers participating at ESUG. This year there will be
a Free software day, and ESUG will donate 10% of its benefits to the Squeak
foundation.

Information and Preliminary Call for Papers

GENERAL INFORMATION

For the 10th consecutive year, the European Smalltalk User Group is
organizing a Smalltalk Conference to bring together Smalltalk users from
both academia and industry in a friendly atmosphere. As always, the
attendents will enjoy tutorials, workshops and demonstrations on various
Smalltalk related subjects. Continuing a strong tradition in organizing
Smalltalk events for Smalltalk practicioners, this year promises to be very
exciting.

ESUG organizes a Smalltalk Joint Event comprised of: Camp Smalltalk,
Smalltalk Conference, a Free Software Day, a Teachers Forum and Smalltalk
Doctoral Symposium!

     - An official (and free) Camp Smalltalk (notice that it starts on the
saturday before so that Campers can be productive and stay during the
     week).

     - The Smalltalk Doctoral Symposium, where students doing Master and PhD
theses have the opportunity to present and discuss their research work
with industrial and academic Smalltalk experts.

     - Finally the Advanced Seminars:
Similar to last year, we will offer two tracks: invited talks which
should interest everyone, and the technical presentations, which are
     more specicalized.

This year:

     - a free Software day will be organized around GnuSmalltalk,
     PocketSmalltalk, and Squeak.

     - a Teachers Forum will be organized to share teaching experiences. We
     are looking for experience reports.

     - ESUG will support the Squeak Foundation by donating 10% of its
    benefits.

All these exciting events will take place in the last week of August, at the
Ecole des Mines de Douai in Douai, France (1h30 away from Brussels by car
and 1h10 away from Paris by train). The Conference takes place at Douai in
France. Early information can be found at www.esug.org or at
http://www.iutc3.unicaen.fr:8000/esug2002/1.

As always, we cannot make this work without contributions from the actual
Smalltalk practioners. Therefore we invite people to submit proposals to
present papers (both academic or industrial, technical or experience
report), or to exhibit. Together with invited speakers and Campers this
promises to be another exciting Smalltalk event.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROSPECTIVE SPEAKERS

Prospective speakers must clearly explain the format they would like to use
(tutorial, experience report, workshop or demo). Each proposal must
include an abstract of around 200 words. All proposals should be sent to
Stephane Ducasse (ducasse at iam.unibe.ch) AND Roel Wuyts (wuyts at iam.unibe.ch),
in plain ASCII pasted in the body of the e-mail (NOT attached).

We will make a ESUG Smalltalk Conference Web Site, containing the
abstracts and the slides of the talks presented during the Conference.

Hot topics include, but are not limited to,
- Experience using eXtreme Programming
- Webserver applications
- Distributed applications
- Squeak and Open Source Development
- New Smalltalk implementations and optimizations
- Smalltalk Development Tools
- Language improvements or enhancements

We are especially interested in real-world industrial applications written
 in Smalltalk.

Exhibitors or sponsors should directly contact Stephane Ducasse
(wuyts at iam.unibe.ch) or Roel Wuyts (wuyts at iam.unibe.ch) for more
information.
