I think a bit is better than nothing. You'd need an email address list (of 
news hacks - start out by having an army of ants (us) scouring over web
sites looking for editor's addresses) and a sort of weblog where you can
refer these people to. Then make sure that every single damn product, success,
milestone gets reported. It's a numbers game: if one of ten news people
publishes one out of ten press releases, you win.

With the current wave of Open Source news, there's a good chance that people
will actually use the information.
