Although I'm not Aaron, I think I can answer that.
You really have get get something at least the 
power of a 200 Mhz Ipaq.  The low end gray scale
iPaq should probably work fine.

I finally managed to get Squeak (and Dynapad) 
running on my Zaurus (Sharp's Linux based PDA
with HW very similar to the iPaq, but including
a retractable keyboard).  Very nice!  Everything
works, but there's a lot of tweaking to be done.
Notice, this is not a Qtopia compatible VM, but
completely replaces Qtopia (pretty much runs
on the bare machine, using the DirectFB code
that someone posted (sorry, don't have the ref
handy)).
