Well, it explains part of it.  It does nothing to explain the factor 
of three slowdown that you reported between 2.9a and 3.2.

I have slow noticed that 3.2 seems to be very much more sluggish, but 
had put this down to switching to Mac OS X Carbon from OS 9.
