rich text in Squeak

Lex, et. al,

Let’s step back and take a look at a core idea that Smalltalk and Squeak
are exploring. This idea is a place to facilitate the expression and
sharing of ideas. Squeak’s rich media support allows expression of these
ideas using a variety of means including text, graphics, sound, animation,
and hyper linking. I use Squeak to express relationships among membership
data at church. It is a killer linked graph processor for doing web
application design. It’s a joy sharing in the wealth of talent and good
will in the Squeak community.

I would find having some elementary form of RTF file I/O useful. Text/font
effects and basic paragraph/page formatting would go a long way. I would
want it to make blasting things between Squeak and M$ applications I am
required to use at work more transparent. However, it’s surprising what
you can do with .TEXT and .GIFs with the rest of the world and a little
discipline.

I have been lurking around the Squeak community for several years. One of
the things that make it a pleasant place to rest one’s mind is the positive
encouragement we give one another. I appreciate the civility and good
humor of the community and the willingness that we show toward one another.

What we have here in the Squeak community should be treasured and nurtured.
In many ways, it’s what the little computers should be, useful tools and
not boat anchors.

Squeak and it’s community are seriously cool.
Let’s keep making it better!

P.S. If time work, family, and energy permit, I plan to try doing some
basic RTF functionality. I just can’t commit to when I’ll have it done let
alone in a state that meets Squeak standards for quality and coolness.
