I don't doubt that people are missing your point, but you have also missed mine.  The correct place to tweak the tens of panels, and hundreds of widgets that comprise the GUI I mentioned is in the code/view generator that creates them.  That's for two reasons: (1) the work is blown away by the next generation cycle (and they happen as we add to the data we capture); (2) there are just too damn many of them - it's easier to tweak the generator once than to tweak hundreds of items.
