Two other things that might be useful.

First, you can also *drag* out of a color palette to the color you 
want to pick. This is sometimes easier (and sometimes necessary when 
the color you want is tiny) -- thus you can move the dropper around 
until the color you are trying to pick up shows at the top of the 
palette or on your destination object.

Second, there is a preference for what the "change color" halo does. 
Go to the halos category and turn on the preference 
"propertySheetFromHalo". This will pop up the property sheet from 
that halo directly.
