The speed-problem is, I think, mostly related to the fact that
swiki does not allow clients to fetch the icons conditioanlly 
(If-Modiefied-since). So the browser  can't cache the icons,
and they have to be transfered for every page. 

For my own wiki I have installed a patch that was posted
to the pws liste some time ago, and the user-experience improved
very much.
