The road to a self compiled vm is still a very rough one. For example the 
configure script checks for existing GL files, but in the makefile the linker 
fails because GL and X libraries/paths are not included in the list of 
libraries the linker should consider. Another pitfall is, that it seems that 
a 3.5 vm can't be compiled with a gcc3 (default C compiler in debian sid by 
now). The vm compiles and links ok, but launching it with a 3.5 image 
presents an emergency evaluator on startup. If this is a known issue I would 
say that the configure script should check for the right compiler version, 
should it not?

Besides, compiling a vm on windows with the source and wintool archives from 
sourceforge happens like advertised. It's magic. :)
