VM 3.4.1 on SuSe Linux 8.1

I saw what I believe to be similar symptoms when I built Ian's VM on
Debian unstable which used gcc 3.2 by default.  After going in circles
for a while I tried using gcc 2.95 instead and I've been using the
resulting VM now for a couple of weeks and everything is fine.
