Well, it *does* provide people the possibility to add, to their *own*
setup, multiple sources and manage them with a single interface. There
are lots of good reasons: Debian not wanting to distribute the JDK
(policy reasons), sites with their own private additional packages,
etcetera. 

I don't think it's a mistake. It's just a gun-class feature: handle
carefully, or you will shoot yourself in the foot.
