This brings to mind the linguist Ferdinand de Saussure's description of the 
system of signs that makes up a natural language (considered synchronically) 
as "a system of differences without positive terms". Whether or not this is a 
good way of thinking about natural languages, it seems like an apt 
description for namespaces.
