[newbie] Sound problem

I've just got 3.6g-2 running on my Linux system. I've been trying to get the sound working.

I've killed artsd and esd, launced squeak and tried to play the sample sound in "Welcome to ...". I've can hear the music but it's badly distorted. I think I know what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it in squeak.

I have a C-Media PCI sound card on my i386 box. The linux sound driver is "cmpci". I noticed when I first got artds and esd working that I had the same distorted sound problem. The bottom line to fix this was that I had to run these in 8-bit mode. The same thing happened when I got XMMS running, I had to configure it to use 8-bit sound.

So, I suspect I have the same problem with squeak (not that it's a squeak problem, but a sound configuration problem). So I'm looking for advice on how to "force" squeak to use 8-bit sound.

If I have to change a build option and re-compile that's fine since I installed the 3.6g-2 VM from the sources in the first place.

Thanks for any help you can provide,
Bill
