It seems that the ANSICompatibility package modifies

	Number>>readRemainderOf:from:base:withSign:

I reverted that method to the 3.6g base image version and found that
	
	TextFile openDoc

then works fine.

I'll investigate further what is wrong with this method in the 
ANSICompatibility package.
