Sidenote:

As some of you remember old SM had the ability to register
"Repositories" (meant for 3.3alpha). The idea was that SM should have
all repositories registered and also "mounted" into the global
namespace.

I am not proposing anything here - just wanted to mention that SM can
hold other things than packages. There is IMHO nothing preventing us
from having a list of known Monticello repositories (=places where there
are Monticello files).
