Well, they look identical to the vertical scrollbars, so whether you
think they're ugly depends on what you think of the vertical ones. ;-)
Although if you have the scrollbars set to flop-out mode, there are
problems with the horizontal scrollbars drawing behind buttons in the
browser windows, so I'd agree that's kind of ugly. Steven Swerling
mentioned something about fixing that...

I think this would be good. I could see that some people would rather
not bother with them and have lists display the way they used to. Also,
it's a good temporary workaround for the problems with the flop-out
horizontal scrollbar. I'd make alwaysHideHScrollbar default to false.
(Technically, this should be a three-way preference, combined with
alwaysShowHScrollbar. It could be implemented with radio buttons, like
the morphic/halos preference. Although if you don't want to fuss with
that, a regular pref would be fine.)
