It absolutely _must_ be. No 'if', no 'but'. I simply won't put code
into the VM package that I am able to tell breaks portability.
Extensions to benefit specific machines must be Pareto efficient - ie
they can benefit a specific machine so long as they don't disadvantage
any other.
