Thanks for your comments.

I'm hoping to do a proof of concept with the Cryptography package Lex 
referred to and SOAP (I think) and just use what already exists in 
Squeak for our early demos.   Public and Private key encryption will 
allow me to do nearly everything I need.

In the long run we may be asked to implement SSL in order to interface 
with Shibboleth.
