Should we remove compressed GIF generation from Squeak 3.7?

Well, not *all* GIFs, just the compressed ones. :-)

I think it's a good idea to get the base patent-clean. Reading and 
writing only uncompressed GIFs in the base sounds like a good idea until 
the remaining patents expire. Perhaps someone in a country where no 
applicable patents are currently in force can post the compressed 
version for those that can legally use it.

More and more packages can read PNGs, and all software packages that 
read GIFs can read uncompressed GIFs. Thus, exporting images from Squeak 
will still work, but the images will be bulkier. And if the bulk is a 
problem, I bet uncompressed GIFs compress reasonably well with things 
like gzip.
