If you double click on the Squeak 3.7.2Beta1.app you don't get a file  
selection dialog?

if you go to the same directory in a terminal session and do an
ls -lR

what do you get?
I'll note that some versions of stuffit out there unstuff and unset the  
executeable permission as a 'safety measure' This prevents
the application from running.
