All of the answers have been very helpful, and I was interested both in 
a workable solution (just for fun) and the EToy programming process.  I 
figured the problem would be just complex enough to dive deeper into 
Squeak/Smalltalk math, and I was curious to see how the two interact.

I did find that after editing the text of the script (to insert/juggle 
parentheses) that toggling back to the tile version undid my textual 
changes.  I assumed it was because the changes I had made could not be 
adequately represented by the tiles.
