You mean that it is marked as not being present anymore? Possible, but not  
really necessary. It'll time out in any case, and if it's just an ADSL  
connection going bang for a minute or two it's a bit heavyhanded to  
declare the host dead...

Anyway, that's probably advanced optimization. I'll first want to try to  
get the two-stage approach going.
