memory and VM issues

Ah, but comments made by ian in the revision notes are
1105 64bit cleanliness
1104 temporary 32-bit backwards compatibility
1103 sizes of int, long, long long...

which leads me to believe after 1100 he started messing with things  
in 64bit ways
