What a setup! :)
I agree with you completely, and I think we should go further by not
using files to transfer changes. When you get access to an image that
has stuff you want in it, you should be able to tell your image to talk
to it and negotiate what ought to be transferred, using inter-image
message-sends exclusively. This effectively turns the two images into a
single distributed one for the time of the transfer. There is no target
image prep required, and you don't have to wonder how to compose a
standalone file. The providing image could be out on the Net, or copied
to your own machine first.
This is how Naiad works. (Naiad is Spoon's change management system.)
