Brainstorming on profilling (was Re: RV: Instrumenting Send and ...)

To profile the VM, I banged on it until I was able to compile it
non-inlined and then I tried to run a profiler on it. Unfortunately, it
was far too slow to use. =\ -- the configuration might be useful for
coverage testing though...

Friends don't let friends use GCC 3.4.4
GCC 3.3.6 produces code that's twice as fast on x86!
