I'm surprised.  As Avi reported,  I get on my Mac:

SqueakOnJava:     9,211,283 bytecodes/sec;   509,641 sends/sec
SqueakOnC:        89,824,561 bytecodes/sec; 5,038,709 sends/sec

Actually, if I run the benchmarks in 3.8, I get more like 111M bytes/sec, so we've got a bit of an apples vs oranges problem (though nothing like Andreas's difference).  To be truly fair, you'd have to run the mini image (that's what I do).  I believe you can get that out of the jar, or I'll send it to you if you're interested.

Numbers like 20x to 50x  to me indicate either a miserable Java or something else going on.

So I'm curious to see some other results.
