Wow, thanks!  But I can't make any sense of the gcStats.txt file.  I also tried
MessageTally>>spyOn: which seems to indicate that the garbage collector ran many
times while the audio file was played.

Which brings me to my next question: what control do I have over the garbage
collector?  Can I turn it off completely temporarily, or just tell it to relax a
bit?
