I'm not sure I understand you question.  I expected when we were ready
to disconnect 4.1 from the trunk we would simply

$ cd <ftp root directory>
$ rm 4.1
$ mkdir 4.1
$ cp <relevant files from trunk> 4.1/

and go from there.  However I think I must be missing your point?
