So I'll go re-re-read the last round of discussion, and make sure I'm
not deliberately snubbing anyone's ideas, and deliver some code.
Hopefully it won't be a complete disaster, but in order to fix this
problem, _someone_ has to write something. So I'll take the hit, and
put my code up for tomato-throwing.
