I don't remember any traffic on vm-dev asking for this.

On the contrary. This release, we released the Spur VM (squeak v5) which has a brand new object representation never before used in any system, and providing much better performance. The VM also includes SSL plugins compiled by Tobias Pape that are statically-linked against their cryptographic libraries.
