There appears to be an infinite loop involving closing the halo when
halo transitions are turned on.

Open the Preference Browser to the Halos section.
Turn on "Halo transitions".
Bring up the halo for the Preference Browser.
Turn off "Halo transitions".
Frame step the UI with Ctrl-. and Proceed until it responds again.  Maybe.
