FWIW, I followed my hunch and gave the Intel VM a much larger

Smalltalk vmParameterAt: 47 put: 5000000

and got a big improvement running it on the M1: better than the Intel VM 
on Intel mini, but not as good as the M1 VM on the M1. Certainly not the 
big loss I was seeing before. So, not too shabby.
