I stumbled across the WordNet class that was intended to connect to the princeton wordnet database. First problem is that the URL changed since the class was written, and the second issue is that princeton don't appear to be able to provide the service very reliably due to funding problems.

If anyone is attached to the facility it would be worth considering alternatives, like maybe some of the ones mentioned here - https://alternativeto.net/software/wordnet/
