I would like to have this fix for my image organizer based on 5.3, but this
thread is so far over my head, I couldn't even identify where the problem
is, or what the solution is, even after combing through every message.  Did
I miss it?

+1000, 5.3 is still used, it's worth fixing for a multimedia system, IMO.
I would be grateful for a backport.  Or, if someone would at least post the
changeset fix clearly here, it's possible others would like to have it
fixed, too.
