Sigh
The mac vm has always returned the path to the vm, and not the name  
of the executable, note the comment in getSystemAttribute:
However I'll consider changing that.

Smalltalk getSystemAttribute: -1

does nothing on the mac or unix unless you've passed in a parameter  
on the cmd line.
