     I wrote an interface to the portmedia frameworks (portaudio,
portmidi, etc.) and found it to be quite straightforward. Check out
their APIs at http://portmedia.sourceforge.net to see if it has the
level of abstraction you desire. I'd be happy to help as a consultant.
