Hi,

as I was just skimming some source (SML/NJ) I found a header
file assyntax.h that abstracts ASM from the underlying 
assembler, be it AT&T, gas, or Apple as.
  It apparently comes from Mesa, see here:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/tree/src/mesa/x86/assyntax.h
