Ah, right. I see now that the note at the very bottom of this chain explains
that somebody (I'm not sure who) had previously screwed up the Debian build,
apparently in a well-intentioned but not entirely competent attempt to link
to the platform-supplied libjpeg. So that is what is causing the problem, and
this "improvement" to the Debian build needs to be removed until such time as
the Squeak JPEG plugin has actually been updated to use newer versions of the
library.

It is highly unlikely that there is anything wrong with libjpeg on Debian.
On the contrary, it is almost certainly an improvement over the old jpeg
code that we are using in platforms/Cross. So it would be nice if someone
did an update of the plugin to use platform-supplied libraries. But that
is not an excuse for breaking the system, so it needs to be done right.
