Ah, this was not normal. In a vanilla image it's just 200 K.

That 3 MB garbage image was saved before I had implemented weak references in Squeak. So when I ran it with the new GC it dropped all the stuff that it held strongly before (e.g., 1300 file streams, each with its own 2K buffer).
