:0 * squeak $HOME/mail/squeak Works fine for me in my .procmailrc, as my last rule. If some random person were to send me mail with the word "squeak" in it, well, if it didn't hit the spam filter layer, I guess I would see it in my squeak folder. :-) -a.

While COM/ActiveX is available to some extent on Windows, Mac, and a very small subset of unixes (Solaris??), I think we need a better mechanism. The biggest problem is that the whole web paradigm is such a poor way of navigating through information in the first place. Using a web browser is much like having to read a book by owning a whole copy of the book for each page; you read the first page in the first book, then set it down and pick up the next copy to read the second page, and so on. HTML was designed to provide static text; nothing more. Now, in search of new ways to separate people from their money, we have had an incredible number of kludges added to the browsers- activex, plugins, "Dynamic" html, xml, etc. yet we're still stuck with a basically inflexible and poorly laid out interface. Someone once described MS-DOS as CPM modified after hearing of rumors of Unix; the web browser interface is winfile.exe as modified from rumors of Smalltalk. Do we really want to cripple a distributed Squeak by tying it into the web paradigm? Or can we brainstorm something different? Now, I don't have any suggestions; Closest I've come to a distributed app is client/server database work which is almost as bad as the web from the point of view of keeping individual images independent, yet able to work together. I filter mail using a three-stage process: first check the "To:" field for the mailing lists I'm on, and categorize it that way. Then discard mail from known junk-email locations sent directly To: me, and finally sort the remaining mail based upon whether my address appears in the To: or Cc: fields or not, discarding mail that doesn't (the bulk of the junk-email, which uses Bcc). This works very well for me, so I'd vote to keep the list fields as they are, which allows the original sender to be identified. [BTW, I think we've been quite lucky that the Squeak mailing list hasn't been hit by any bulk spammers subscribing from throw-away accounts] -- tim

Alejandro has taken the *first* step in allowing us to use Squeak to deliver Web based applications in the same way that others use Java. As you point out, another component of the solution is to do a Netscape plugin. The ActiveX wrapper provides the same function for Internet Explorer as a Netscape plugin does for Netscape. Both browsers enjoy significant market share and are legitimate targets for embedding Squeak VM's. I think we are probably going to need to figure out how to deliver applications in some form other than source code or as monolithic images. Then we can consider Squeak as an alternative to Java for this class of application. -david

newbie Q - how to work with Morphic

Hello everyone, I am having problems using Morphic. When I execute this code: WorldMorph new initialize open. a Morphic window pops up (as it should), but I cannot get it to display any popup menus. I've tried various combinations of mouse clicks and key presses. Do you know how I can get to the World menu and New Morph menu as shown in the Play With Me - 6 Morphic world? I'm running Squeak under Win95 with a two button mouse. Mouse buttons don't work on Squeak Linux

All, Hi. I'm having problems using Squeak under Linux. It seems that my mouse buttons are not being read correctly. I can only get one menu to show up. For example in the Transcript I can only get the menu to show up with options like "edit label" and "change color". I cannot get the menu with evalution options. I'm using Squeak 2.0. RedHat 5.1. A two button mouse in the PS/2 port configured to emulate 3 buttons under X with the mouse buttons set for left handed.
