After some questions to the list I finally got most of this to work. It's nothing revolutionary, just some bitmap buttons. Enjoy. Karl PS: This enhansement is 2.9a latest only. Due to aligment changes.

Does the Mpeg plugin work in Windows?

I'm trying to use the MPEG plugin described at: http://www.smalltalkconsulting.com/html/mpeg3source.html I'm using Squeak 2.9alpha update #2988. I loaded in the changesets: MPEGPlayerJMM.10.cs MPEGPlayerMorph.10.cs I have the windows plugin in the same directory as the squeak executable and image. The windows plugin was from: http://spair.swiki.net/.uploads/Mpeg3Plugin.dll When I try the any code on an mpg or mp3 I get a primitive failed error. An example is: foo _ MPEGPlayer playFile: 'test1.mpg' The error being: "Error: a primitive has failed" MPEGFile class(Object)>>error: MPEGFile class(Object)>>primitiveFailed MPEGFile class>>primFileValidMPEG: MPEGFile class>>isFileValidMPEG: MPEGPlayer>>initialize: MPEGPlayer>>initializeWithFileName: MPEGPlayer class>>playFile: UndefinedObject>>DoIt Compiler>>evaluate:in:to:notifying:ifFail: TextMorphEditor(ParagraphEditor)>>evaluateSelection The same error in the same primitive occurs no matter what I try even with different .mpg's which seem valid according to other programs. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Do I need to do anything to 'register' the plugin DLL or anything? Anyone using it on Windows? Chris.

I did ScriptingSystem saveForm: (Form fromBMPFileNamed: 'Video:icons:stop.bmp') atKey: 'stopMPEG'. How do I include this forms in an enhancement ? Karl

Life implementations of a Turing Machine

Paul Rendell has apparently implemented a Turing Machine using a game of Life. http://www.rendell.uk.co/gol/tm.htm >From there you could do all sorts of twisted things... like redoing the VM simulator to use a Turing Machine implemented using Dan's BitBlt Life. It might be slow, but it would be unique! Mike

In writing the OSProcess classes, I included placeholder concrete classes for Win, Mac, etc. Initially I had no intention of implementing any of the Win/Mac stuff, but I would like to make this cross platform in keeping with the rest of Squeak. And I would be very unhappy if we needed to put another layer on top of OSProcess; I would prefer to fix the design of OSProcess if I did not get it right. Do any of you have any feedback on OSProcess after loading it into your Windows or Mac based Squeak images? Is anyone considering implementing the Windows, Mac, OS/2, or Acorn parts? From a design point of view, is the simple "Unix process" model adequate for representing these concepts on other operating systems, or would it be better (for example) to represent threads of execution as distinct from the process data context? I did not want to add the complexity of modeling OS threads unless it is really needed, but some operating systems put a lot of emphasis on thread scheduling, so perhaps it is better to add this as a basic part of the modeling of an "OS Process". I do not own a Mac, and I am rather short on time, knowledge, and motivation when it comes to Windows. Therefore, any advice would be welcome. Non-Unix implementations would be even more welcome. Thanks, Dave p.s. Now that FFI is available, it should be much easier for someone to implement the Mac or Windows versions of the UnixOSProcessPlugin module. Actually, the separate plugin could be completely eliminated by using FFI.

Making an inverted ellipse morph?

I'm curious if it's easily possible to make an inverted ellipse. (It's like an ellipse only that the bounding rectangle is not transparent and the ellipse itself is transparent (and all clicks go through it)). I could subclass EllipseMorph and make it so that the containsPoint: returns an opposite value so that clicks go through, but that still doesn't solve the drawOn: problem. How can I make drawOn: to draw everything around the ellipse keeping the insides transparent? Dean
